The 2013 ATHENA Award® Recipient:
Ann Arbor Insurance Centre
Rebecca Johnston, moved to Michigan as a newlywed. When her husband’s business failed, she returned to work choosing a career in insurance. She initially worked for a nationwide company, quickly advancing through the ranks. Upon leaving the company, she joined an independent agency and eventually earned her license to sell insurance. Once licensed, she actively involved herself in the National Association of Insurance Women, chartered the Washtenaw County chapter, and served as its first President. Through this involvement she saw the need for mentorship of women in the insurance field.
When financial difficulties hit again, Rebecca was challenged with gaining carrier appointments to handle expiring contracts. She jumped in, found an office, incorporated, purchased additional carrier franchises, and began mentoring female insurance agents in earnest.
Always striving to grow her insurance knowledge, she has remained active in industry associations. She served on the Board of NAIFA-Washtenaw, was the first woman to be elected President of the chapter, and is the recipient of their 2013 Distinguished Service Award. Rebecca is committed to giving back to the community. She has served on the Board of Huron Valley Boys and Girls Club and the Pittsfield Optimist Chapter; she is actively involved in her church and is the President of the Women’s Council of Washtenaw County. Through her mentoring she has advanced the careers of many women throughout Washtenaw County.
Rebecca recently sold her agency, but continues to mentor the new owners. After that, she may truly “retire”.
